New Therapist at TREC DC: Welcoming Jazmin Simms, MS

Hey everyone! My name is Jazmin (she/her), and I’m so excited to be with TREC as a new trauma therapist extern!

I’m currently a fourth-year doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at the Illinois Institute of Technology. In school, my thesis explored the constructs of sexual identity concealment, internalized homophobia, and the mental and physical health outcomes of Black Queer Women. I think I really adapted the idea that “research is me-search” and desired more accessible data for people with similar identities.

As a clinician, I really enjoy getting to know someone, working to understand who that person is, and learning the story of their experiences. I use therapy as a means of providing support, validation, and autonomous skill-building. I am a Black, Queer woman who is deeply interested in providing therapy that centers the needs and experiences of marginalized communities, particularly Queer and Trans People of Color (QtPOC), LGBTQ+, women of color, and individuals navigating sexuality exploration and empowerment, trauma healing and recovery, familial dysfunction, or any significant life transitions that you just may need a little more support for.

I have immediate availability, and offer therapy sessions at a sliding-scale, reduced fee, in order to make this healing work accessible!

Loves: reality tv, haunted houses, the color lavender, psychological thrillers, and the warmth of the sun with a nice breeze, the word “apricity”, learning new words, the scent of black cherry, playing Rummikub, going to festivals, and spending time with my friends.
