Individual Therapy and Assessment at TREC DC

At the Trauma Resilience and Education Center of Greater Washington, D.C. (TREC DC), we are dedicated to providing specialized, evidence-based therapy to trauma survivors. Our highly trained clinicians use proven therapeutic approaches tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. We understand that every person’s experience with trauma is different, and we are committed to working with you to find the best path to healing.

Evidence-Based Practice for Trauma Survivors
Our approach to individual therapy is rooted in evidence-based practices (EBPs), which are scientifically validated methods for treating conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related issues. These therapies are designed to be time-limited, focusing on helping you achieve measurable improvements in your mental health.

Types of Evidence-Based Therapies Offered:

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
  • Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

These therapies often include homework or practice work between sessions, which helps reinforce the skills and strategies you learn in therapy. For more detailed information about these therapies, please visit our resources page.

Psychological Assessment
In addition to therapy, we offer comprehensive psychological assessments to evaluate symptoms, clarify diagnoses, and provide recommendations for care and/or possible accommodations.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia

In addition to trauma-focused individual therapy, TREC DC offers Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) as an adjunctive or stand-alone treatment option. Insomnia can significantly impact your day-to-day functioning, particularly when it co-occurs with trauma-related conditions.

Our CBT-i program consists of 6-8 telehealth sessions, providing evidence-based therapy designed to help you overcome sleep difficulties. Whether you struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or both, CBT-i can help you restore healthy sleep patterns.

Psychological Assessment

We offer assessments designed to empower clients and their loved ones by providing clarity regarding diagnoses and potential tools and resources to help them move forward in a way that matches their values and goals. We employ a trauma-informed approach to this process, and work to provide affirming care that centers a clients’ experiences within their cultural, familial, and social contexts.

Types of assessment we offer:

  • Comprehensive psychological assessments: These assessments are designed to identify diagnoses that may be present for a specific individual; they focus on a person’s overall mental health symptoms, interpersonal experiences, and general social and emotional functioning. They can be used to help clients gain an understanding of themselves and their symptoms, guide recommendations for care, and connect to resources or tools. This process normally includes the completion of questionnaires, 3-5 hours of assessment, scoring and reporting writing (completed by the assessor), and a one-hour feedback session during which findings and recommendations are collaboratively discussed.
  • Second opinions (e.g., review and re-clarification of previous evaluations): This process involves a review of prior written reports, academic history, or psychiatric history. Following this review, we provide additional psychoeducation about the findings and will support identification of additional resources. Please note that we may identify alternative explanations based on the data provided, or affirm the findings/conclusions made in a way that can be best understood. A written summary of our interpretation can be provided, if requested.

What can’t we offer?

Providers at TREC DC do not maintain the competency to determine causal links in the case of evaluations for federal disability applications (e.g., we cannot state that a mental health condition causes disability to an individual). We simply report the findings of our evaluation, along with relevant recommendations, and it is up to you whether you would like to use this report in support of your disability application or appeal. If you are seeking an evaluation in support of you or your family member’s disability application, you must inform us during the phone consultation. We reserve the right to decline any disability-related evaluation requests.

At this time, we do not offer cognitive, psychoeducational, or neuropsychological testing.
